My wife, Shannon, and I have three children of our own. As parents, we are
acutely aware the awesome responsibility that comes with ensuring the safety and well-being
of children. We have each worked in areas schools and area camps for the
last twelve years. In that time we have seen many safety plans and been
trained in numerous first aid and first response techniques. We focus those twelve
years of experience and training into the three days that Camp Tonto is in
session.
Camp Tonto hopes to complete the accreditation process for
the American Camping Association during the 2004 camping season, when
we offer our first five-day session. Even though Camp Tonto is
not accredited by the ACA, we structure our staff and activities using the
standards set by the American Camping Association. Camp Tonto has Red Cross and YMCA
certified lifeguards in all water activities and has a full-time nurse on
staff. Nurse Bonnie, RN, will be available to dispense medication, first
aid, and love.
In addition to physical safety, we are very protective of
a camper's emotional safety. Camp Tonto is meant to be a recharge weekend
for hardworking students. We help that recharging process by protecting a
camper's emotional well-being. Our staff has a proven track record of
positively motivating campers and maintaining a friendly atmosphere.
Gainesville offers a surplus of qualified and experienced
counselors and facilitators. Counselors at Camp Tonto come from
local universities, teaching colleges, public schools and area
summer camps. Since we have sessions when most camps do not, we really
get to be selective and choose from the best of the best. With our
many years of teaching and residential camping in the Gainesville
area, Shannon and I are able to select counselors from a pool of
very qualified individuals who we have actually worked with. This
allows us to choose counselors who we have seen in action.
